Download the libusb library, and simply copy the right libusb. This will work both for updating and re-flashing the same firmware image. The rootfs will not be touched by this. Also see troubleshooting section, bullet 6:"If you cannot establish Rationale: on accidental booting in between the 2 flash processes, the sequence formerly suggested rootfs first will result in a broken system.
The sequence "eMMC first, then rootfs" is checked back with Nokia affiliates and is proven to work as long as your rootfs still is somewhat functional. N users don't need to reflash the eMMC of their device when updating firmware but can do so to clear all data from the device. You may need to do so if you have a pre-production device e.
However there are cases known where for instance the desktop widget configuration data which is stored in user's home directory gets corrupted and causes bootloops on hildon desktop startup failing. In this case you'll actually need to reflash your eMMC to recover system from bootlooping there are other more involved methods to recover too, search for "backupmenu", "watchdogs", "rescueOS". Note that the eMMC images available do not contain pre-loaded maps. If you reflash your eMMC you will lose them the Maps application will work as usual but you will need to download the maps needed.
Experienced users still may want to follow the rootfs-then-eMMC scheme, which doesn't need the battery removal, but is way less "fool-proof" wrt accidental boots.
Especially "charging" actually also implies a boot of the system, and there's no lower limit for duration of such an accidental boot, 5s are more than enough to ruin your freshly flashed system.
Main article: Seamless Software Update. SSU is Nokia's new method for upgrading the devices over-the-air without requiring a reflash.
When Nokia pushes an update over SSU, you will see an update notification and be given the option to install the update—just like with your computer. Generally speaking, SSU updates should be relatively pain-free, but there are a few issues to watch out for:.
You can get it back by simply running an apt-get install osso-software-version-rx34 , for the N, and an apt-get install osso-software-version-rx44 , for the N Then updating your repository list in Application manager. On N probably also previous devices , it is possible that the application manager ends up with a message stating that it is required to upgrade using the Nokia PC application. In this case please read the article on known problems and possible solutions.
In that case, you can try using apt-get dist-upgrade command as root, the app manager has to be shut down to override. This is not supported because you can break future updates. Several users had to reflash after apt-get dist-upgrade! It may help to connect directly to the computer USB ports, avoiding the use of a hub - which includes the USB ports on laptop docking stations.
The USB ports in the back of a laptop may also be better than using those in the front. Some distributions do not present the USB device in the way that it expects it. It seemed as though the Nokia update software had wiped the phone and then promptly crashed before copying over the new firmware. I was wondering how I could explain all this to the company when when sending the device back when I hopped on Identi. The wise and good friends I have there seemed to know a lot more about this and suggested I try to reflash the device and perhaps revive it.
I was keen to try it ASAP but the Maemo dev website was actually down for server migration over the whole weekend. This was Saturday night and I was facing a long Sunday without knowing if I still had a phone or not, good timing on my part.
I transferred the SIM to my old handset so I could still make calls and twiddled my thumbs. Hopefully it would be receptive to reflashing. Like a phoenix from the flames. My phone desktop came up pretty much as it had before but with some app icons missing and sporting the original blue N theme. I restored the backup and it rebooted the phone once again. All of my music, videos and other data were still intact on the device.
It seems the N has some fairly sensible partitioning going on internally. When you wipe the device firmware it only clears the OS partition and leaves the rest alone. The backup just stores the names of your installed packages and reinstalls them from the repos, like any good Debian system should I suppose. As of today the repository server is back up and I restored all my applications in one go. The phone is exactly as it was before I broke it and I now have the latest firmware too.
It was an emotional journey but I made it in the end. Thanks to the help of friends online, for which I thank them. I suppose it shows us one thing, that the N while being a lovely device still has some way to go on the software front.
Excuse the awful pun. They need to be ambitious. The mediocre people working at these greedy short-sightning corporations really stinks… and they even get paid. A lot of Android devices seem to work the same way. I flashed the device in the end from the Linux utility which I mentioned.
Dan, you wasted a perfectly good opportunity to take the device apart! As a side note, have you decided what to do with the box the n was shipped in? I also had issues during the upgrade. Stubborn as I am… I just made sme space… moved the apt cache to the home and started an apt-get dist-upgrade. Halfway the update it had issues with space… and eventually the apt update broke.
I just restarted the phone… it kept rebooting in a loop for about 5 times. Phone is now up-to-date and working perfectly. That is what I call robust! Gerard — I never thought to do a dist-upgrade and I should have really, being a Debian fan. It showed Nokia on the dimmed out screen and did the same vibrating thing. You should be fine. You need Flasher Follow the guide on the Maemo wiki.
It should then be detected by Flasher and copy the software over. This is not acceptable. So search the list for the Hi Brothers i downloaded EMMC in net it shows mb size but it complet downloaded size is mb is it right please tell me. I tried flashing my n and it flashed the firmware ok but i tried to flash the eMMC then and when it was finished the screen flashed a couple of times then turned off and was charging the phone so i took off the usb cable and booted the phone, after that it had said MISSING IMAGE and i coulnd do anything.
I tried reflashing it couple of times but had the same effect, then i tried to flash only the firmware on the phone and it worked just well. What seems to be the problem? What files and stuff does that contain? Something i cant use now that i havent installed that one? Am Having the exact same problem. Would also like to know if there is anything i am missing by not using the eMMC.
Well, You have to put o space after the. The phone starts to turn on and stop with some dark points…. Anyway the phone look to be restarted and stop with some dark points….
